Uw proefschrift is een belangrijke stap in uw ontwikkeling tot wetenschapper. Het proefschrift is iets om trots op te zijn, want de resultaten van uw onderzoek staan daar straks in. Het geeft u echter niet de mogelijkheid om uw academische en algemene ontwikkeling tot wetenschappelijk onderzoeker te presenteren.
In het Erasmus MC hechten wij sterk aan de brede opleiding van onderzoekers. Om dit zichtbaar te maken introduceren wij per 1 januari 2009 het zogenoemde ‘PhD porfolio overzicht’.
Dit houdt in dat alle promovendi als laatste pagina van hun proefschrift een overzicht opnemen van de gevolgde PhD opleiding (zoals cursussen, workshops, seminars, internationale congressen) en het gegeven onderwijs. Ook u verzoeken we derhalve om dit ‘PhD portfolio overzicht’ in uw proefschrift op te nemen.
Vooralsnog (in 2009) is geen minimum eis gesteld aan de omvang van opleiding en onderwijs, maar de PhD committtee hanteert als richtlijn een gemiddelde van 30 ECTS voor de periode van aanstelling als promovendus.
Voor velen van u duurt het nog meer dan een jaar voordat het proefschrift er is. Is deze informatie dan nu al relevant? Ja, want u moet nu al plannen en bijhouden wat u aan PhD opleiding volgt en welk onderwijs u geeft.

Hoe gaat dat in z’n werk?

1. U maakt regelmatig (bijvoorbeeld eens per jaar) een plan met uw promotor en begeleider welke cursussen, workshops, seminars, congressen u wilt volgen en waar u onderwijs geeft.
2. Elk jaar houdt u bij wat u doet en wanneer, met welk resultaat, en hoeveel tijd het u heeft gekost. Dit doet u door bijvoorbeeld cursuscertificaten, presentaties of congresbijdragen te archiveren.
3. Aan het eind van ieder jaar evalueert u met uw promotor en begeleider de resultaten en uw ontwikkeling.
4. Wanneer u het einde van uw promotieonderzoek nadert en uw proefschrift samenstelt, maakt u een overzicht van de onderdelen van uw archief in het formulier ‘PhD portfolio overzicht’, dat u opneemt in uw proefschrift.

Dear PhD student,

Your PhD thesis is an important step in your scientific development. The PhD thesis is a major achievement, one to be proud of, because it presents the results of your scientific work. However, the thesis does not show your academic and general development into an academic researcher.
At Erasmus MC, we support a broad personal development of our scientists. Therefore, we introduce the so-called ‘PhD portfolio summary’ by January 2009. With this portfolio, all Erasmus MC PhD students include a report of their PhD training (e.g. courses, workshops, seminars, international conferences) and teaching as last page of the thesis. So, we ask you to include your PhD portfolio into your thesis.
In 2009, there is no requirement for a minimum amount of courses, hours or ECTS. The PhD committee Erasmus MC recommends in average of 30 ECTS PhD teaching and training during your PhD period.
For many of you, the PhD thesis is still several years away. Is this PhD portfolio information already important for you right now? Yes, because you should start as soon as possible planning and monitoring your PhD training and teaching.

What does this imply?

1. You plan on a regular basis (e.g. once a year) with your promotor and supervisor which PhD training (workshops, seminars, conferences etc.) you want to attend and which teaching you want to participate in.
2. During each year, you monitor your training and teaching (what, when, with which result, how much workload it was, credits).
3. At the end of the year, you evaluate with your supervisor the results and your development.
4. At the end of your PhD research, you make an overview of your monitoring and put it into the PhD portfolio summary, which will be the last page of your thesis.
