The postgraduate school Molecular Medicine (MolMed) organizes for many years now the Basic and Translational Oncology course in cooperation with the school Medical Genetic Center (MGC) and with contributions from many moderators and speakers of the LUMC.
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the field of translational cancer research.

Audience
The course is meant for PhD students and postdocs of the Research Schools MGC and MolMed, but others (e.g. MSc-students and technicians of the LUMC or Erasmus MC) are welcome as well. The maximum number of participants is 40. See the attached program for details on the registration fees. At the start of the course, participants will receive a comprehensive reader consisting of recent papers relevant to the lectures.

The amount of ECTS awarded for the entire course is 1,5.

Program
The program is set up in the following five logical steps; one per day:

  • Pathology and signal transduction pathways in cancer
  • Biology of the cancer cell; DNA, RNA, Epigenetics
  • Genetic susceptibility, invasion, and metastasis
  • Clinical practice: diagnostics, targeted therapies, and end-of-life interventions
  • Translational research, epidemiology of cancer, and future of cancer research

Because there is no Josephine Nefkens Symposium in 2010, the course duration is extended to 5 days.

Keynote speakers this year are René Bernards (NKI) and Piet Borst (NKI), whose lectures will be announced more widely.
The program is also enriched with journal club and lab sessions with a few of the speakers. Publications to be discussed will be announced in advance via our website.

Short report
As another ‘innovation’, all participants are expected to write a short report at the end of this course, two pages in A-4 format will be enough. The report should be on a course-related subject, for example on a specific topic covered by a speaker, a day theme, or the participant’s research topic incorporating what was learned during this course.
We believe that this will stimulate active participation without adding rigid academic regulations. This report is to be discussed with the participant’s supervisor, and must be sent with a cc to the organizing committee. Participants need to prepare this report in order to receive the certificate of participation!

Location
The course venue is room Ae 4.06; except on Monday when the course starts off in the rooms Be-4.25 & Be-4.56 (in the JNI/Be-building). All rooms are in the Medical Faculty of the Erasmus MC Rotterdam. Click here for location maps and travel information.
