Regulations of the Erasmus Postgraduate School Molecular Medicine (MolMed)

Article 1: The Postgraduate School, its functionaries and organs
- 1.1 There is a postgraduate school, fully named Erasmus
Postgraduate School Molecular Medicine (MolMed or MM), which is fully part of the Erasmus MC / Faculty of Medicine and Health of the Erasmus University of Rotterdam, hereafter called the “School”. This school is recognised by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Science and Arts (KNAW) and follows its rules.
- 1.2 The School has tree functionaries: the Scientific Director, the Chairman of the Educational Committee, and the Managing Director.
- 1.3 The School has three organs: the Board, the Educational Committee and the PhD Committee.
Article 2: Scientific Mission of the School
- 2.1 The School is clinically oriented towards molecular biomedical research. This is organised in four main themes:
- Endocrinology and aging
- Haematopoiesis and Lymphopoiesis
- Solid tumours
- Infections and host response
- 2.2 The School focuses on transactional research. Thus the distinctive feature of the School is its coverage of a broad spectre of disciplines, integrating fundamental as well as clinical science, and involving basic researchers and clinicians with a vast experience in applied clinical research.
- 2.3 The School recognises the need for high quality training and education of PhD students and Postdocs, an interactive and multi-disciplinary approach, a continuing process of renewal in research and education, and encourages national and international collaboration.
Article3: Tasks of the School
- 3.1 The School organises and facilitates as much as possible the training and education of PhD students, Postdocs and if necessary other researchers within the School.
- 3.2 The School promotes as much as possible all research in the School, specially the innovation, co-operation and organisation of fields of research which cover different disciplines and departments of the School.
- 3.3 The School communicates and promotes externally the research and its results within the School, builds and maintains active networks with other national and international research groups, and explores everything that is useful for a better knowledge and understanding of what is done within the School.
- 3.4 The School creates exchange and study facilities for PhD students, Postdocs and researchers with other research groups.
Article 4: Scientific Director
(Art. 9.22 WHW en art. 25 Bestuurs- en Beheersreglement EUR)
- 4.1The Scientific Director is a professor at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, and is appointed by the Dean of the Faculty for a period of four years.
- 4.2 The Scientific Director executes the scientific mission and the tasks of the School as decided by the Board.
- 4.3 The Scientific Director is in charge of the management, including the financial management, of the School.
- 4.4 The Scientific Director is the Chairman of the Board of the School.
- 4.5 The Scientific Director has the authority to mandate tasks within the School.
Article 5: Managing Director
- 5.1 The Managing Director of the School is appointed by the Board.
- 5.2 The Managing Director reports to the Scientific Director and the Board of the School and supports them in all the tasks that he has to perform for the School.
- 5.3 The Managing Director supports all the other functionaries and organs of the School. He advises them in demand or not on all questions regarding the fulfilment of the scientific mission and the tasks of the School.
- 5.4 The Managing Director is responsible for all the executive tasks in the School.
- 5.5 The Managing Director is the chairman of the PhD student- and Postdoc Committee.
- 5.6 The Managing Director is the Secretary of all the organs of the School.
Article 6: Chairman of the Educational Committee
- 6.1 The Chairman of the Educational Committee is appointed by the Board and is a professor at the Erasmus University Rotterdam.
- 6.2 The Chairman of the Educational Committee advises the Scientific Director and the Board on demand or not on all questions regarding the educational policies and the tasks of the School.
Article 7: Board
- 7.1 The Board of the School is appointed by the Dean of the Faculty. Only working group leaders within the School can be a member of the board.
- 7.2 The Board decides on all matters concerning the performance of the research– and educational programs of the School.
- 7.3 The Board decides on all matters concerning the internal quality management and the external quality reviews of the School.
- 7.4 Without prejudice this to the rights of the Executive Board of the Erasmus University Rotterdam and taking it to consideration the notices of appointment, the Board divides the tasks of those who are appointed in the School and decides on the working relationships of these employees.
- 7.5 The Board mandates tasks tot the Scientific and Managing Director of the School.
- 7.6 The Board can decide on further regulations within the School.
- 7.7 The Board advises the Dean of the Faculty and gives the Dean information if required.
Article 8: Educational Committee
- 8.1 The Educational Committee of the School is appointed by the Board, and consists of researchers and PhD students of the School.
- 8.2 The Educational Committee advises the Scientific and Managing Directors and the Board on demand or not on all questions regarding the educational policy and tasks of the School.
Article 9: PhD Committee
- 9.1 The PhD Committee is appointed by the Board.
- 9.2 Post docs of the School can be advisory members of the PhD Committee.
- 9.3 The PhD Committee advices the Scientific and Managing Directors, the Board and the Educational Committee on all questions regarding the educational policy and program of the School, and all other questions regarding the interests of the PhD students within the School.
Article 10: PhD program
- 10.1 The School organises an educational Program for the PhD students and
Postdocs of the School. All educational activities are also accessible for other researchers within the School, limited accession excepted.
- 10.2 The Educational Committee exercises supervision on the educational program
and all regulations regarding the PhD students in the School, regardless the department within the School they belong to.
- 10.3 The PhD students in the School do not have other obligations than those
established in their own educational and supervision plan. It is a responsibility of the head of the department, supervised by the Educational Committee, to establish such a plan.
Article 11: Finances
- 11.1 The budgets the School consist of salaries of employees who are paid from the four budget streams of Erasmus MC; the financial budgets made available by the Board of Directors of Erasmus MC; and sponsoring budgets meant for activities of the School.
- 11.2 Every year the Board fixes the budget distribution of the School, put forward by the Scientific and Managing Director, having heard the Educational Committee and the PhD- and Post doc Committee. The budget plan gives a complete picture of the revenues and expenses for the PhD- and post doc programs, symposia and all other activities of the School.
Article 12: Reports
- 12.1 The Scientific and Managing Director draw up an Annual Report of the activities
of the School.
- 12.2 The Board decides about the Annual Report, with advice of the Educational
Committee and the PhD- and Postdoc Committee.
- 12.3 This report is offered to the Dean of the Faculty and the Board of Directors of
the Erasmus MC, the working group leaders, the KNAW and others who have connections with the School.
Article 13: Closing issues
- 13.1 In those cases in which this regulation does not provide, the Dean of the Faculty decides, in consultation with the Board of the School.
- 13.2 This regulation, or a change in this regulation, is operational on the date of the
registration in the regulations of the Erasmus MC / Faculty of Medicine and Health of the Erasmus University of Rotterdam.
