PhD defence procedure

Doctorates for PhD students at Erasmus MC are officially awarded by Erasmus University Rotterdam, the university ceremonies office handles the administrative procedures for the doctorate on behalf of the Rector Magnificus. The regulations on obtaining a PhD degree at Erasmus University and further information on the practicalities of getting the degree are available at (link).

If the PhD defence reception is held in the lobby of the Education Centre, the catering can only be supplied by the house caterer. Eurest has adjusted its prices for food and drinks at PhD defence receptions and now offers PhD candidates the possibility of purchasing drinks only. Cakes and pastries may be supplied by an external caterer in consultation with Eurest. A PhD candidate may also bring along preservable and dry products, such as chips, nuts, etc. However, it is no longer permitted to bring along home-made or perishable products such
as salads, cheese, cakes or pies.

Hora Est
In order to be admitted to the PhD defence procedure, a number of forms (1 through 3) must be completed in stages and submitted to the Registrar’s Office. This administrative procedure takes place through
Hora Est (link), the online registration system of the Registrar’s Office at the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR). The forms must be accompanied by the required signatures and enclosures: a certified copy of the qualification (if obtained elsewhere than the EUR), proof of ID and – if relevant – an application for exemption stating the reasons.
