The postgraduate school Molecular Medicine (MolMed) launches a novel (half-day) course on Whole Genome Sequencing. This course is presented by Complete Genomics (BGI/CGI) in close collaboration with the department of Bioinformatics of the Erasmus MC.

Aim

The demand for Whole Genome Sequencing keeps increasing due to its large diagnostic potential for cancer studies. Now that the costs of whole genome sequencing (WGS) are dropping and evidence of the importance of non-transcribed sequences such as enhancer regions is accumulating, WGS also becomes a feasible alternative for exome sequencing used in clinical genetic studies. Many Erasmus MC departments have generated data with Complete Genomics. The current course aims to generate insight into Complete Genomics WGS procedure as well as in the data analysis / interpretation.

Details

Time schedule: 10.00 - 17.00 (NB - starts earlier!)

Location: Room no. 8 at the Erasmus MC, Educational Center (Onderwijscentrum), 2nd Floor, Erasmus MC. (NB - NOT at the Bioinformatics dept.!)

Speakers

Rick Tearle from Complete Genomics will give a seminar on whole genome sequencing and data interpretation. The seminar will focus on data analysis tools and how their data relates to data from other sequencing platforms. CGI tools can be used through Galaxy for free, for analysis of data from any type of sequencing platform. Topics that will be addressed are:

·         Basics of WGS

·         Complete Whole Genome data

·         Study design

·         Possibility of questions on own sequence data analysis

Andrew Stubbs from the Erasmus MC, Department of Bioinformatics will introduce CGI tools in Galaxy and associated NGS applications for use in your own data analysis.

Full participation is 0,3 ECTS

Attendance fees
The subscription fee of non-commercial participants is € 75,00 with 100% discount for all MolMed members.
See attached program for more details.

General information
Financial regulation of the Postgraduate School Molmed

From August 1st, 2012 the following financial rules apply:

Non-commercial course, symposium or workshop fee: €200/day, €750/week

• Participants of the postgraduate school MolMed: discount of 100%.
• Other Erasmus MC participants, e.g. of MGC, COEUR, NIHES: discount of 50%.
