Basic course on Survival Statistics for MSc-students, PhD-students and MDs.

This course will be contain both lectures and practical exercises with SPSS.

This course will be taught by Emmeke Aarts, of the VU Amsterdam.

Two day course on medical statistics for MDs, PhD students and MSc students. The first day consists of a brief introduction to statistics, the second day is on survival analysis specifically.
Aim of the course: Understanding (some of) the essentials of statistical theory, choosing the appropriate statistical test given the research question and data, performing the corresponding statistical analysis and interpreting the resulting statistical output.

Preliminary program setup

Block 1 (morning day 1): Introduction to basic statistics

  • Descriptive statistics
  • P-values
  • Confidence intervals
  • Type I error & statistical power
  • Correlation and linear regression

Block 2 (afternoon day 1): Introduction to survival analysis

  • Observed survival time & unknown survival time (i.e., censoring)
  • Descriptive statistics for survival analysis

Block 3 (morning day 2): Survival rates and group differences

  • Life tables: Kaplan-Meier analysis
  • Group differences (e.g. difference due to treatments)

Block 4 (afternoon day 2): Predicting survival rates and more complicated topics

  • Cox proportionial hazard model and assumptions
  • Effect Size & statistical power
  • More complicated topics (e.g., trunctetion, competing risks)

Time schedule
Two days from 10.00 - 16.00.
