REGISTRATION FOR GROUP B DATES FOR THIS GROUP: TUESDAY 2/2; TUESDAY 16/2 and TUESDAY 8/3

The Postgraduate School Molecular Medicine organizes this fourth series of workshop on Presenting Skills for PhD-students, MSc-students and starting Postdocs.

In small groups of six participants, each with three sessions, all basic elements of giving a scientific presenting in English will be discussed. Each session will have a different teacher.

Learning objectives

During the Presentation Skills workshop you will practise giving your presentations in front of a small friendly group comprising your colleagues and the lecturer. For each session you are required to prepare a presentation of 5 to 10 minutes. The presentation is to “sell” your research proposal, or results, or grant proposal or whatever in the best way. So totally you will present 3 times, during each of the 3 sessions.

For optimal feedback from the English teacher, Joy Burrough, during the first session she should see your presentations beforehand, in order to correct any errors and/or suggest improvements. This should be done at last 3 full days before the workshop starts. You may send your presentations to Joy Burrough by e-mail: J.burrough@telfort.nl in order to have enough time to act on the advice and improve at least some of the slides before the day your presentation is scheduled

Also during the following two scheduled sessions you will give your presentation in front of your colleagues and the teacher who will give you feedback. During the 2nd session, the teacher is a scientist who has high scores in our own courses. The 3rd session is with a didactic teacher with a camera. In response to this feedback you are required to improve your presentation.

Program

* Session      1

How to use the English language, in your PowerPoint sheets and verbally, will be covered.

* Session      2

Structure your presentation and use visual aids (mainly PowerPoint) to get your message across. The structure of your presentation and use visual aids will be discussed again.

* Session      3

Body language: How to use your whole body, including your eyes and voice, during your presentation. Interact with the audience: How to introduce yourself, relate to the audience and answer questions. This session will be recorded by a camera.

NB the content of the sessions can vary depending on the presentations and the teacher of the session.

When participants fail to show up, the school will send them a fine.

Three afternoon sessions from 13.30 – 16.30. There are a few weeks in between each session to give you the time to work on your next presentation.
