Basic course on 'R'

The Erasmus Postgraduate School Molecular Medicine of the Erasmus MC organizes this basic course on the statistical package ‘R’.

'R' (http://www.r-project.org/) has become the 'lingua franca' of data analysis and statistical computing. Its great success is attributed to its free availability and the capability for a wide range of analysis and graphics.

Location and times will be announced as soon as possible:

Monday 19 December Location: computer room C00-3

Tuesday 20 December  Location: OWR-22

Wednesday 21 December  Location: OWR-22

Thursday 22 December  Location: OWR-22 (from 09:00 -13:00 and from 16:15- 18:00 hours)

From 13:00 - 16:15 in OWR-39

Friday 23 December  Location: OWR-22

Audience
This course is primarily targeted at (junior) biomedical researchers and therefore the only prerequisite is general knowledge of molecular biology.

Program
In this course we will provide a smooth introduction to the R system using both GUI-based and command-based sessions.

Aim
Learning objectives: after following this course participants will be able to use R in their everyday data manipulation and statistical analysis tasks. Moreover, they will learn the basic structure of the language in such a way that it will become easier to follow more advanced topics such as the Bioconductor (http://www.bioconductor.org/) or advanced R programming (e.g. handling large data bases, etc.). This R course is a preparation for the course: Analysis of microarray and RNA Seq expression data using R/BioC and web tools, which will take place from 4 - 8 July, 2016. Please note that there is no overlap between the Basic course on R and  the Analysis of microarray and RNA Seq expression data using R/BioC and web tools course.

What this course is not about!
This course is not about statistics. However, since R is a statistical programming language some basic knowledge of statistical concepts is required. During the course the concepts needed will be briefly summarized.

ECTS
This 5-day course is 1,8 ECTS.
