Photoshop and Illustrator CS6 Workshop for PhD-students and other researchers

The Erasmus Postgraduate School Molecular Medicine (MolMed) has two main activities: (1) the organization of education for PhD students; and (2) the stimulation of cooperation between several departments with regards to translational research.

The school organizes this two half-day hands-on Workshop on the use of Photoshop and Illustrator CS6 to edit and refine images for medical publications and to make and adapt figures, graphs and tables. It is especially meant for medical PhD-students, Agiko’s and others who wants to know more about making figures for publications in scientific journals, such as Nature, Science and others. Both programs, Photoshop and Illustrator, will be dealt with evenly.
This workshop uses the Adobe program Photoshop CS6 and Illustrator CS6 which can be bought at a heavily reduced price for all Erasmus MC employees via Surfspot.nl (as part of the Creative Suite CS6). All Erasmus MC employees who have a SOM-pc will have access to Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign CS6.

Contents
In this workshop you will learn to create a figure with imaginary data from different file-types, such as: ppt, pdf, psd, tiff, jpg and eps. We will be adding pictures and tables into one figure meant for publication. We will be correcting pictures and images for colour and learn about the difference between CMYK and RGB. And we will be importing and exporting data, such as images and figures, to and from Photoshop and Illustrator. It is possible to bring your own images as well. The second day will be partly about modifying your own images.

Audience
This Workshop is meant for PhD-students and other researchers who want to learn how to adapt their own images, in order to include them in scientific publications.
Basic knowledge of Photoshop and/or Illustrator is useful, but not necessary.

Day program
Morning: will start with lectures on Photoshop, explaining the different tools and letting you work with them on several prefabricated images. The Guidelines for Image-publications will be explained. And also a few aspects of Illustrator will be discussed.
Afternoon: will focus more in-depth on the skills learned during the first day. Adobe Illustrator will be discussed more extensively, and importing and exporting images from other programs will be discussed as well. You can also bring your own images, if you have some, or practice some more with the exercise images.

All participants from the MolMed receive a discount of 50 % and need to pay € 100.
PhD students and MSc-students from other schools receive a discount of 50 % and pay € 100.

MolMed fees for Photoshop, Indesign and Research management course (change in regulations!)
Per November 2014 the course Research Management and the Workshops on the Adobe programs Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign are no longer free for MolMed-members.
Due to the high costs of these courses (expensive, external teachers etc.) and because of the fact that these topics are not considered essential elements of the scientific PhD-track, the board of the school has decided to no longer offer these courses for free to MolMed-members.
The fee for these courses can be paid for example from your Erasmus MC ‘Persoonlijk Budget’, in which case you will need an invoice on your own name.

All participants who will pay the invoice from their personal budget need to provide their personal address details when they will online apply for the course.
The ‘Persoonlijk Budget’ is meant for this kind of courses. The invoice for these courses can also be paid by your PI, by yourself or from the budget of the project you work under (in that case, provide your 'kostenplaats' no.).
This exception only applies to these courses. All other courses are still free for MolMed-members.

MGC registration fee
Members from the research school MGC will also need to pay for this course themselves. This can be done via the Persoonlijk Budget. But MGC does not pay for your participation in this workshop.

Invoice
Fees can be paid upon an INVOICE. After your registration you will receive the INVOICE per post. Payment per bank can be done together with the number on your INVOICE.
Late participants can also pay in cash upon signing in for the Workshop.

Cancellations
The fees are for all the days of the Workshop. There is no discount for partaking only in part of the Workshop. Our cancellation policy is that cancellation is possible up to one week before the start of the Workshop. Later cancellation will not be accepted, but you are allowed to send a substitute.

Commercial participants & sponsors
(Participants from) companies are invited to inquire for participation and sponsoring.
