Basic Human Genetics course: Genetics for Dummies

This 2-day course will explain basic concepts in human genetics and includes some history, basic knowledge of molecular biology, introduction to Mendelian and complex genetics, technical aspects and applications of sequencing and array technologies in genetics and the use of DNA technologies in society. Mendelian genetics will address different approaches to detect mutations in families segregating hereditary diseases, complex genetics will discuss the history and applications of genome wide association studies in populations.
This course is meant to give some introductory background for people wanting to start or become involved in such studies, or just want to know what it is all about. There is ample time for Questions and Answers during and after each talk. Some presentations will have a small quiz to test your knowledge at that point.

At this moment we are considering a digital form for this course through Microsoft Teams, with live (not pre-recorded) presentations and interactions.
Background literature
The following books can used as reference books for basic knowledge of (molecular) biology (no need to read all of it beforehand):
- ‘Genetics for Dummies’ (2nd ed.; T.R. Robinson, Wiley Publishing, Inc.; ISBN 978-0-470-55174-5, 2010)
‘Molecular & Cell Biology for Dummies’ (2nd ed.; R Fester Kratz, ISBN-10: 1119620406, Aug 2020)
- ‘Molecular Biology of the Cell’ (6th ed.; Alberts et al.; published by Garland Sciences; ISBN 978-0-815-34432-2, 2015)
- ‘The Problems Book: for molecular biology of the cell’ (5th ed.; W. W. Norton & Company; 5th ed.; ISBN-10: 0815344538, 2015);
- "Human Molecular Genetics" (5th ed.; Tom Strachan & Andrew Reed; published by Taylor & Francis Ltd.; ISBN-10: 0815345895, Dec 2018).

PDF files of the presentations will be distributed before start of the lectures.

Audience and participation
The target audience includes Master of Science students, technicians, PhD students, post-docs, assistant/associate/full professors with an interest in genetic studies. These may come from various disciplines and different backgrounds with an interest in genetic studies in families or populations but do not have the necessary genetic background knowledge.

Students who have followed the Nihes Summer Course (master Health Science and related courses) ESP57 ("Genomics in Molecular Medicine”) do not have to follow this course because for ESP57 you are expected to already have a basic knowledge level of genetics.
This short course is also very useful as a step-up for the more advanced MolMed "SNP course” which covers a much wider and deeper range of topics in this rapidly evolving field (see:
The minimal number of participants is 8, and the total number of participants is limited to 30.

General information
Financial regulation of the Postgraduate School MolMed, from January 1st 2019, the following financial rules apply, but they may differ per course still. Look at the course fee of each course to be sure which discounts are really applied:
• Non-commercial course, symposium or workshop fee: €200/day, €750/week
• Participants of the postgraduate school MolMed: discount of 100%
• However, the Personal Leadership course and the workshops Photoshop/Illustrator/Indesign have to be paid from the ‘personal budget’ of employees, MolMed members and PhD students included. So they will receive an invoice from us which you have to pay and which will be reimbursed by your Department. When you will pay from your personal budget you need to provide us your home address details for the invoice.
If there is no personal budget left, the MM-members get a discount of 100%.
• PhD students and Master’s students, regardless of institution: discount of 50%.
•The course fees of research master’s students will be paid by their master program at rate of €100/ECTS. For not I&I master students: please inform your master program in advance whether they agree to pay.
•Master’s students who are paying the fee from their private budget: discount of 75%. When you will pay from your personal budget you need to provide us your home address details for the invoice.
•However, 2 courses in statistics are paid centrally by the Dept. of Research policy for all PhD students from Erasmus MC! These are R and the SPSS course. So for Erasmus MC PhD students, these courses are always free, provided you are officially registered as a PhD student.
There is one fee for the entire course. There is no reduction for partial participation.
Commercial participants, companies & sponsors are invited to inquire about commercial tuition fees and about sponsoring.
All invoices will be sent by email to the mail address that you filled in upon registration. If this address is not correct we use your Erasmus MC address.
Those who register for a course, symposium or workshop agree with these financial conditions.
