Molecular Medicine Post Graduate School

Description

This 2-day course will explain basic concepts in human genetics and includes some history, basic knowledge of molecular biology, introduction to Mendelian and complex genetics, technical aspects and applications of sequencing and array technologies in genetics and the use of DNA technologies in society. Mendelian genetics will address different approaches to detect mutations in families segregating hereditary diseases, complex genetics will discuss the history and applications of genome wide association studies in populations.

This course is meant to give some introductory background for people wanting to start or become involved in such studies, or just want to know what it is all about. There is ample time for Questions and Answers during and after each talk. Some presentations will have a small quiz to test your knowledge at that point.

At this moment we are considering a digital form for this course through Microsoft Teams, with live (not pre-recorded) presentations and interactions.

Audience and participation
The target audience includes Master of Science students, technicians, PhD students, post-docs, assistant/associate/full professors with an interest in genetic studies. These may come from various disciplines and different backgrounds with an interest in genetic studies in families or populations but do not have the necessary genetic background knowledge.

Students who have followed the Nihes Summer Course (master Health Science and related courses) ESP57 ("Genomics in Molecular Medicine”) do not have to follow this course because for ESP57 you are expected to already have a basic knowledge level of genetics.

This short course is also very useful as a step-up for the more advanced MolMed "SNP course” which covers a much wider and deeper range of topics in this rapidly evolving field (see: www.molmed.nl/courses).

The minimal number of participants is 8, and the total number of participants is limited to 30.

Course fees:

If not otherwise indicated, Erasmus MC PhD courses are free for Erasmus MC PhD candidates and Research Master students who use them as electives. Erasmus MC employees pay €100/day. External PhD candidates pay €100/day. Commercial and other external participants pay €200/day. There is one fee for the entire course, there is no reduction for partial participation.

Cancellation policy:

Erasmus MC Graduate School charges a cancellation fee of €75 for all cancellations made more than 22 days before the start of the course. Fifty percent of the course fee, with a minimum of €75, is due for cancellations made between 21 and 10 days before the start date. The full course fee is due for cancellations made less than 10 days before the start date, or in case of no-show without cancellation. For Erasmus MC PhD candidates the full course fee in case of the cancellation policy will be the equivalent of the number of course days times €100.

All invoices will be sent to the head of department or for external participants to the e-mail address provided upon registration.
