Course
"MoMaDC mini-symposium: "Monocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells and Metabolism”

Discription
The intracellular metabolism in monocytes, macrophages and dendritic cells (DCs) appears crucial for the function of these critical controllers of innate and adaptive immunity. They undergo profound metabolic reprogramming in response to environmental cues, such as hypoxia or nutrient alterations, but also upon triggering by danger signals and cytokines. Therefore, metabolic alterations in monocytes, macrophages and DCs appear crucial to maintain immune homeostasis and metabolic dysregulation could lead to disease pathology.

In this mini-symposium, we aim to reach investigators, including PhD and MSc students, from different departments at Erasmus MC as well as other academic institutions, who are interested in learning and discussing the state-of-the-art in this field. Opinion leaders, including Thomas Weichhart (Vienna), Sophie Janssens (Ghent) and Jan Van den Bossche (Amsterdam) will share their latest insights with us.

Related to this mini-symposium there will be a possibility for young investigators (PhD students, early-career postdocs and MSc students) to join a masterclass with the keynote speakers on Friday morning November 29th.

Participation in the mini-symposium and/or the masterclass is free of charge, but please sign up via this website to ensure your place.”

Friday 29 November: Masterclasses:

A masterclass will be held in conjunction with the mini-symposium on monocyte / macrophage / DC and metabolism. This masterclass will provide a unique opportunity for young investigators of the MolMed research school to pitch their work, and discuss it with opinion leaders in the field. Dr. Sophie Janssens and Prof.Dr. Thomas Weichhart will moderate discussion sessions.

The masterclass is open to PhD students, early-career postdocs and MSc students, who are encouraged to apply for a slot at one of the discussion tables. The format will be that you will present (part of) your work in a 5-minute pitch in a group of maximally 6 people, and solicit and discuss suggestions, comments, etc. The topic of your pitch should fit in the context of the MolMed research school, but does not necessarily need to be restricted to the field of expertise of the moderator. Both experimental results obtained in ongoing research projects as well as mature or immature research proposals can be brought for discussion. Motto of the class is: ”Pick those brains!”

Based on the number and nature of applications, the organizers will seek to adjust the composition of the discussion tables to optimize interactions.

Full participation is 0,15 ECTS.
